Our Mission
Baby S.T.E.P.S is a service project orchestrated by four senior students at North Carolina A and T State University: Lindsey Moris, Jaela Melton, Lauryn Armbrester and Santina Paul.
Children are a blessing for families, but financial hardships can cause difficulty in raising and bringing a child into the world. In 2020, 43% of new mothers were WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) recipients in Guildford County. In the state of North Carolina, 61.6% of women were WIC recipients, 3% higher than the national rate of 58.1%. The qualifications for a single mother on WIC are a maximum weekly payment of $519. Nearly half of the new mothers needed financial support for their families.
This means that a significant portion of new mothers may not be able to gain prenatal assistance, support medical bills, and may not be able to contact medical professionals who can support them through their pregnancy. In 2020, 30.3% of expecting mothers never received prenatal care during their pregnancy. The Kotelchuck Index, which measures the number of prenatal care visits a mother gets, showed that 1,209 expecting mothers in Guilford County received less than 50% of their expected visits; 621 of these women are African American.
A missing component is preventing women from getting the necessary tools and support for their pregnancies and post-partum care. These appointments give women insight into their progress, what to expect in the upcoming weeks, and most importantly, catching any abnormalities in the baby or the mother’s body. Mothers who receive no prenatal care are more likely to give birth to low birthweight and preterm babies. Healthcare providers can educate mothers on essential health issues, such as diet and nutrition, exercise, immunizations, and weight gain.
With the support of the Greensboro YWCA, an existing agency serving mothers in the Greensboro area, we will host Baby S.T.E.P.S. This event is a community baby shower and perinatal health fair with the purpose of:
We will offer a space for mothers to hear from trained doulas and learn about local food, diapers, and milk banks. S.T.E.P.S. has confirmed tables on safe sleep, car seat installations, baby wrapping, and more. With these incredible resources, the S.T.E.P.S. team believes expecting mothers will gain beneficial resources.
